چکیده

In order to study the properties of Lovelock gravity theories in low dimensions, we define the kth-order Riemann-Lovelock tensor as a certain quantity having a total 4k-indices, which is kth order in the Riemann curvature tensor and shares its basic algebraic and differential properties. We show that the kth order Riemann-Lovelock tensor is determined by its traces in dimensions 2k ≤ D < 4k. In D = 2k+1 this identity implies that all solutions of pure kth order Lovelock gravity are ‘Riemann-Lovelock’ flat. It is verified that the static, spherically symmetric solutions of these theories, which are missing solid angle space times, indeed satisfy this flatness property. This generalizes results from Einstein gravity in D = 3, which corresponds to the k = 1 case. We speculate about some possible further consequences of Riemann-Lovelock curvature.

Field equations for gravity: An alternative route

We present an alternative derivation of the gravitational field equations starting from the Newton’s law, which intrinsically brings in observer dependence in the theory. Projecting the Riemann curvature tensor appropriately as fit for an observer, taking a cue from Poisson’s equation, the Einstein’s equations immediately follow. Our derivation naturally adapts to Lovelock gravity theories wher...

Lovelock Tensor as Generalized Einstein Tensor

We show that the splitting feature of the Einstein tensor, as the first term of the Lovelock tensor, into two parts (the Ricci tensor and the term proportional to the curvature scalar) with the trace relation between them is a common feature of any other homogeneous terms in the Lovelock tensor. Motivated by the principle of general invariance, we find that this property can be generalized, wit...

The Palatini formalism for higher-curvature gravity theories

We compare the metric and the Palatini formalism to obtain the Einstein equations in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections that consist of contractions of the Riemann tensor, but not of its derivatives. We find that in general the two formalisms are not equivalent and that the set of solutions of the Palatini equations is a non-trivial subset of the solutions of the metric equation...

Intersecting hypersurfaces and Lovelock Gravity

A theory of gravity in higher dimensions is considered. The usual Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented with Lovelock terms, of higher order in the curvature tensor. These terms are important for the low energy action of string theories. The intersection of hypersurfaces is studied in the Lovelock theory. The study is restricted to hypersurfaces of co-dimension 1, (d− 1)-dimensional submanifo...

Curvature Invariants in Algebraically Special Spacetimes

Let us define a curvature invariant of the order k as a scalar polynomial constructed from gαβ, the Riemann tensor Rαβγδ, and covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor up to the order k. According to this definition, the Ricci curvature scalar R or the Kretschmann curvature scalar RαβγδR αβγδ are curvature invariants of the order zero and Rαβγδ;εR αβγδ;ε is a curvature invariant of the order ...
